Poulan 44

(one man)

Here is Shreveport, Louisiana built Lil' Brute.

This saw came from a fellow saw hunter who passed this find on to me.  It was rescued from an estate just north of Leesburg, Georgia.  I don't think this was a loggers saw due to the absence of the chain rash associated with telling cuts where the chain seems to be the most destructive (when it derails and chews on the saw case).

Don't let the stubby bar fool you, this thing has some power when running at tip-top shape.  As the videos show, she is no speed demon BUT will pull through some hard-knotted wood without blinking.  The saw for the most part is SIMPLE to rebuild as all the crank gaskets are easily cut and bearing-seals are readily available from major bearing distributors.  The carb is no issue as Tillotson HL carb kits are still made.  These "sand cast" Poulans seem to have a simple stupid design pattern with them.  Hard working, straight forward design concept equals old school American ingenuity.

My overall thoughts of the saw:  Just awesome!  20 lbs of easy maintenance for any saw enthusiast.  The roller chain sound is unlike a winding gear drive, has a whirling sound mixed with the POP from the straight pipe muffler body!  "The sound!"
