STIHL 090G

This saw came from a fellow collector who scaled down his collection in central MI.  He got the saw from the original owner who ran it only a good hand full of times. The saw sat for almost 8 years before he got it. So the saw never saw much if any use in it's life.

The Stihl 090G is a gear drive based off the Contra G which its' direct drive counterpart is the 070 and before that the Contra platform.  (Read the "1106 to 090 history in a nut shell" history section.)  Running the 56mm piston (107cc) and fitted with the larger style 090 style 6 shoe clutch, this saw is an absolute beast with a long bar.  The largest bar I have had on an 090G is an 84" bar eating up 72" of wood.  The saw did not hesitate and was willing to handle more.

Easy maintenance and tuning makes this saw easy to run and maintain.  Gear drive specific parts can be more than difficult to find and pricey to say the least.  Base 070-090 parts are readily available for them such as carb kits (Tillotson HL series), top ends, air filter covers, etc.  When you are familiar with the 070 style saw holding this 090G is like hooking a mobile home to a pick-up truck with the gear box on the side.  It completely changes the whole saw from an aggressive direct drive to a gear drive tank ready to mow down anything!  These saws are a popular saw because of the name "Stihl" but it is important to remember what saws were also available during that same time period by Homelite, McCulloch, and many more that also had a gear drive version of their popular direct drives. I will admit I am partial to these 090G's even after working on and running many of the other similar model gear drives.
